Worthing Veterans

There are so many ways to honor those who provide the ultimate in service to our nation – The United States Veterans!!! On this website page we have only a small sample of the many proud men and women of the armed services that we also recognize as Worthing Alumni.

The following words are an observation from Worthing Alumni, Vietnam Veteran Johnny Collins, Class of 1969. Thank you and ALL for your incomparable service to us and the nation!!!!

“The service of Veterans is often forgotten, lost in history, or ignored.
There is a direct correlation between the outcome of military conflicts and the way we live today in this country. What would our lifestyles be like (1) if our ancestors survived (2) if the South had won the Civil War? What if Nazi Germany and Japan had won World War II?
Crispus Attucks was a patriot in the American War for Independence. You could also say he was a “Vet”. The events of Juneteenth included Black union soldiers, known as U.S.C.T. (US Colored Troops) arriving in Galveston to announce the formal end of slavery. They traveled around the state announcing the Emancipation Proclamation. They had the authority and the means to enforce the proclamation. That must have been a sight to see for many at that time. They could be called Vets!
The U.S. entered WW II Dec.7th,1941. During the early years of the war German U-Boats (submarines) regularly patrolled and dominated the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. did not have anything to counter their attacks at that time. At their peak dominance records show that 41 ships, mostly cargo were sunk in 1 month!! This was taken from the book “Torpedoes in The Gulf: Galveston and the U-Boats 1942-1943” by Melanie Wiggins”. The U.S. government did not make this widely known to the public. The sinkings occurred outside of Galveston, Beaumont, New Orleans, and the entire gulf. Bodies would wash ashore and be found by residents living on Bolivar Peninsula from another book “They Made Their Own Law, Stories of Bolivar Peninsula” also by Wiggins. This part of the war was close to our home almost in our back yard.
Due the widespread anti-war sentiment among the U.S. public, Vietnam era Vets did not receive a warm welcome home, except for their immediate families, maybe. San Diego, CA 1969, a group of about 4 or 5 of us sailors were standing at a bus stop. We were approached by a large mob of protesters. Carrying signs, they shouted insults at us as they marched by. I was told later that they were on their way to a much larger anti-war protest. Having a tribute to honor Worthing Veteran’s on the campus, would be an inspiration to some present and future students.”
